Roman is 6 years old and the second child in the family. He loves building drones out of Lego and sculpting little animals out of modeling clay. He is a very cautious boy; he doesn’t run into the street without checking for cars and avoids dangerous spots on the playground.
In his six years, he has rarely been sick and has attended preschool regularly. This made his mom very happy, as she was finally able to return to work after a long maternity leave between her first and second child. However, this summer, his mom noticed that Roman was drinking too much water and had lost a little weight. In early fall, they went for tests, which confirmed the worst – Roman has type 1 diabetes.
Romchyk bravely endures the insulin injections and blood sugar checks with a glucometer, but he struggles with the fact that he can no longer eat whenever he wants, but must instead inject insulin and wait a while before eating.
The family’s lifestyle has changed: Roman has to monitor his blood sugar around the clock, count carbohydrates, and adjust his insulin doses. Everyone in the family now pays attention to the amount of carbohydrates in every food item.
Romka’s mom can only work a few hours while he’s at school, since the little boy can’t administer insulin, count carbohydrates, or monitor his blood sugar levels on his own. To prevent diabetes from causing irreversible changes in his body, Romka needs lifelong insulin replacement therapy. And this can only be achieved through round-the-clock glucose monitoring. Romchyk’s father serves in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and does not earn enough to support the family and cover the costs of Romychko’s proper treatment. That is why we are forced to ask for your help!
