Solve Nastia's riddle

Ten-year-old Nastia is a mystery for doctors. Only geneticists can solve it, but the cost of the examination is beyond the reach of a single mother.

Nastia was born a healthy girl according to the neonatologist's characteristics, but at 2 months her condition began to deteriorate. The child refused breastfeeding, cried often, and slept poorly. The body did not accept the milk formula: the girl constantly suffered from vomiting.

Nina was in despair, because this condition threatened the life of her baby. She fed her daughter with a syringe around the clock to avoid dehydration. Doctors could not explain the reasons for what was happening. When Nastia was not even two years old, her father left the family, unable to withstand the tests. Now he pays alimony in the minimum amount.

Nina’s mother helps in caring for Nastia. But she was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor and is undergoing treatment. Nastia is a kind, persistent girl. During walks, she always takes her mother to the escalator to ride. And while walking along the embankment, she definitely goes down to the water. In everyday life, the girl needs constant help from her family. Nastia is selective in her food: she does not eat vegetables and fruits, but likes to chew something bitter (onions, citrus peels).

Doctors agreed that the child had a rare genetic syndrome. To test the assumption, she needs to undergo exome sequencing in Germany through the Kyiv laboratory "Mama Papa" at a cost of UAH 54,900.

When Nastia was 2 years old, an EEG showed epiactivity. It was not possible to repeat the study until the age of 7 due to the child’s behavior. In the summer of 2022, an outbreak of activity was again found and Carbamazepine was prescribed. Now she needs to undergo night EEG monitoring again, costing 8,320 UAH.

Twice a year, the girl undergoes a series of tests in the Dila laboratory to monitor the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and the general condition of the body. This time they will cost 5,840 UAH.
