Yaroslav’s difficult task

Yaroslav likes Lego construction toys and complicated puzzles so much. It saved the boy during treatment when he was literally hooked up to IVs. His present life is also like a difficult task: the treatment of the serious disease is completed but its outcome is not exactly known. In order to find out if the scheme of treatment was successful if the disease disappeared, it is necessary to undergo an examination in Italy. And the family has no more funds to pay for it.

According to the protocol, Yaroslavchyk was prescribed with MIBG scanning. Unfortunately, it is not performed in Ukraine because of the lack of necessary isotopes. The Italian clinic is waiting for the patient but firstly the bill of 522 euros has to be paid. For the boy’s family, this amount is quite big, since the main treatment exhausted the family budget. Without this scan in Ukraine, one cannot speak accurately about the outcome of the therapy. And if a residual tumor is not detected early, then the precious time for the continuation of treatment may be lost.

Yaroslav fell ill in August 2016. He complained of pain in the spine and in the lower part of the thoracic department as well as constant fever. Following the results of the examination, the doctors made a diagnosis – neuroblastoma in the retroperitoneal space. The disease metastasized to the bones of the skeleton and to the bone marrow. At the National Cancer Institute, the diagnosis was confirmed and a treatment protocol was prescribed. Yaroslav underwent chemotherapy, autotransplantation of stem cells, complex therapy. It resulted in the tumor regression. Now the boy needs this examination to find out if the treatment was successful.
