Sofia wants to walk despite her diagnosis

Sofiia from Kryvyi Rih has a rare hereditary disease that affects the nerves and muscles of the feet and hands, causing their deformation – Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. The girl needs surgery on her feet, which will be performed at the Pyrohov Clinic in Dnipro. But the price of the operation is not an affordable amount for a family.

Sofiia is in the 7th grade online. She has been swimming with a coach for 3 years, even participating in competitions. In her free time, Sonia likes to make jewelry from beads and ribbons.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth amyotrophy – this diagnosis was established in Sonia's mother and older brother. And Sofiia's disease began to manifest itself 2 years ago: the girl began to stumble often on a flat surface, to experience pain in her legs, weakness, tremors in her hands, her feet began to deform.

A year ago, after a long examination and electromyography, doctors confirmed the diagnosis. Since then, leg pain has been a constant companion of the child, sometimes she has to take painkillers.

Unfortunately, this disease cannot be cured, it can only be contained and the symptoms alleviated with the help of medications, physical activity and operations.

Sofiia needs to have surgery on her feet, otherwise the girl will lose the ability to walk. This will eliminate the deformities, reduce pain and improve the stability of her gait.

The operation is scheduled for November at the Dnipro Medical and Surgical Center named after Pyrohov. It will take place in 2 stages: first, one leg will be operated on, then the other. After each surgical intervention, Sofiia will wear a cast for 6 weeks, and then she will have a long rehabilitation.
