Sonia is an active girl who loves to draw and is very talented at it. She is a very outgoing child – she makes friends in any setting. And, fortunately, she doesn’t hide or feel ashamed of her diagnosis. For 7 years now, she has had type 1 diabetes and can calmly administer her own insulin injections when needed.
At the time the family received the shocking diagnosis, Sonia was almost 4 years old. It’s hard to keep a child of that age on a diet, but the family adapted and got used to it fairly quickly. The biggest problems began when Sonia started school – surrounded by other children constantly offering sweets, it was difficult for her to resist. Her mom would constantly come to school to check and adjust her blood sugar levels.
This year, during a hospital stay in Sofia, she was also diagnosed with gluten intolerance. This significantly complicated her diet – they had to change her entire meal plan and get used to it all over again.
Sharp fluctuations in blood sugar levels make life very difficult for this talented and cheerful child. Monitoring is an essential part of a full life for her. The family is appealing to all caring people to help provide sensors to make every day in the fight against this serious illness much easier.
