Decent Conditions for Children on Treatment

The fight against cancer for every child is accompanied by changes in the cardiovascular or respiratory systems. In some cases – both systems are damaged. After all, a child weakened by a tumor has to undergo chemotherapy. These physical stress may result in additional challenges: blood pressure, inflammation, pneumonia, and more.

That is why the treatment of little patients involves the regular diagnosis and instrumental monitoring of the child's condition. The clinical decision depends on these results. The functional diagnostics room is one of the first rooms for children who come to the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children's Medical Center (ZUSDMC) for treatment. Patients are monitored there during their stay in the hospital.

However, the premises where the procedures take place need significant renovation. The old wiring, lack of lighting, the burnt paint on the walls from the past, and the old plumbing are not the conditions in which children should be – these are not the conditions in which children should be! 

Children with cancer need almost sterile conditions because their immune systems are very weakened. And due to improper sanitary and hygienic conditions, in addition to potent drugs, you have to take antifungal drugs. Any infection provokes a weakening.

We plan to implement a major renovation of premises using high-quality and safe materials to create proper sanitary and hygienic conditions critical to children's life and psychological state, their ability to overcome the disease.

Such studies are performed not only on cancer patients but also on children with other serious diseases, including oncohematology, orphan diseases, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases, chronic kidney disease, congenital and congenital immunity deficit caused by other conditions or treatment of other diseases, severe endocrine diseases such as childhood diabetes, autoimmune disorders of the endocrine system, chronic respiratory diseases, including cystic fibrosis.
