Myshko was born a healthy boy in the city of Odesa. However, due to family circumstances, the family moved to a village to live with his grandmother in the Synelnykivsky District of Dnipro region. There, the boy and his brother started school.
Soon after, the COVID-19 pandemic began, and later, a full-scale war broke out. During a routine medical checkup before third grade, doctors discovered that the boy had critically high blood sugar levels. Mykhailo was urgently referred to an endocrinologist in Dnipro. Of course, he was hospitalized immediately after the appointment. The doctors were surprised that, with such readings, the child had come on his own and hadn’t ended up in the ICU.
Myshko was exhausted. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Tests, IVs, and insulin began. By the end of the intensive treatment, the boy became more lively, began to feel and look better. A new life began... Friends and family supported the boy, and the whole family learned to live differently. Most of the money went toward food, because his diet had to be changed and closely monitored. His parents counted carbohydrate units, constantly monitored his blood sugar, and endlessly pricked their son’s fingers. Mykhailo gradually began to gain weight.
In the third year of his illness, the boy began to refuse to prick his fingers. It hurts. It’s exhausting. Adolescence complicates the situation and his behavior. Mykhailo began to rebel internally, and conflicts and strained relationships arose.
Relatives helped his parents buy his first continuous glucose monitoring sensor, and life changed. With the sensor, life became easier and simpler for Mykhailo. He stopped getting so anxious; controlling his glucose levels became easier, and the whole family felt more at ease. At school, he became active again, studies well, and plays chess and soccer.
However, Mykhailo needs help with glucose monitoring sensors to ensure his blood sugar is always checked on time and without interruption. It is financially difficult for his parents to provide Mykhailo with this essential monitoring. We are counting on your help to enable this young man to live a full life!
