Phototherapy, or in other words – the cure with the help of light is the safe and affordable way to treat jaundice in newborns. This method of treatment is made with the help of special lamps. Almost half of the infants in the first 3-4 days of their life suffer from jaundice. This physiological condition associated with restructuring in the body of the baby. In fact, after intrauterine stage of life, baby moves to a new, adult stage, which leads to certain physiological changes and restructuring in the small bodies. In some cases jaundice appears more severe and requires medical treatment. Nowadays, almost 40 % of newborns suffer from jaundice in Department of pathology in newborns in Rivne regional children's hospital. So these kids have to pass the course of phototherapy.

The process of treatment is very simple. The baby is placed under special phototherapy lamp in the incubator or special bed with heating. Treatment session may last up to several hours. Often there are so many babies with jaundice, that doctors have to borrow phototherapy lamps from other departnents in order to provide appropriate treatment for the kids. Also the treatment should be carried out simultaneously to several kids and the sessions should be continious in time and lenght, according to the schedule .
