Big challenges for little Artem

Artem is from Toretsk, Donetsk region, he has hydrocephalus and congenital spina bifida – splitting of the spinal canal with the formation of a hernia. Soon after the birth, the baby was operated on, but, unfortunately, he developed paraplegia - his legs failed. Artem needs a wheelchair, a number of neurological drugs and hygiene products.

Due to hostilities, Artem's family had to move from Toretsk to Pavlograd in April 2022.Since there is no contact with their neighbours, but social networks shows that all the houses in their area were completely destroyed.

Even at 37 weeks of pregnancy, the ultrasound specialist shocked Ella with the fact that the child had a spinal malformation. Therefore, she went to Kramatorsk to give birth. After 53 days, Artem was transported to Donetsk, where an operation was performed to remove a hernia and install a shunt to correct hydrocephalus.

After the operation, a complication developed: the child’s legs were immobilized. Artem can only crawl, leaning on its hands.

He undergoes rehabilitation at the Pavlohrad hospital 3-4 times a year, and in August 2023 he studied at the St. John’s Center. Thanks to this, the boy sits, actively uses his hands to play, draw with felt-tip pens, and show his family with gestures what he wants. He understands spoken speech, but so far he only pronounces vowel sounds.

The neurologist prescribed drugs that improve the functioning of the nervous system: Somazina, Neurokids, Magne B6, Smart Omega, a two-month course of which will cost UAH 4,640. Artem also needs diapers, which will cost UAH 12,300 for 6 months.

Artem loves to be outside, but this is impossible without a stroller. In the fall of 2023, he received a wheelchair from social security, but it is not strong enough for a child, because Artem has recently gained weight quickly. This stroller does not fit in the trunk of a car, and the boy travels a lot: he goes to examinations, rehabilitation, classes with specialists. A stronger, compact stroller costs UAH 34,037.

Ella raises two children alone: Artem’s father does not take any part. They live in a rented apartment. Ella cannot go to work because Artem needs round-the-clock care. The children’s great-grandmother also lives with them. Let's help provide Artem with a stroller, hygiene products and medicines!
