Nazar Tsytsenko is only two. His only life experience is sterile walls of the hospital. His parents went around dozens of experts to find out, what’s wrong with their child and how to cure him. In March 2014, doctors finally diagnosed the primary immunodeficiency, the chronic granulomatous disease. Nazar’s immune system doesn’t produce antibodies, so he is unable to resist infection. Any virus or fungus may kill him. The daily diet of this child must contain antibiotics, antifungals and adjuvants.

This boy doesn’t know the taste of many foods, he can’t play outside with other children, play in the sandbox, neither touch the leaves of the tree. Everything that surrounds him has to be sterile: the kid’s body doesn’t work out the protective antibodies. To Nazar, the smallest infection is life-threatening.

Nevertheless, doctors found out: there is a cure for Nazar. He needs bone marrow transplantation. As they say, it is important to carry the transplantation through before the boy turns three, so that his body would accept borrowed cells easier and faster.

Among all clinics of the world there aren’t many to offer such an operation to immunocompromised children. A Swiss clinic agreed to make a transplantation for 500 000 EUR! The parents went desperate. However, owing to mediation of volunteers of Ohmatdyt (Kyiv, Ukraine), the clinic in Pavia, Italy, specializing in such transactions, agreed to make it for 138 476 EUR. That sum is significantly smaller, but for a young Ukrainian family this money is still incomprehensible. Nazar’s monthly maintenance therapy costs about 17 000 UAH, which is far above the level of an average Ukrainian family income. So far, relatives and friends of Nazar’s parents helped to raise about 25 000 EUR.

In UBB we are aiming to raise 250 000 UAH, giving Nazar a chance to get well – to live and learn the world, as all healthy babies do.
