Sofiyka is an active, creative girl who loves to read, make diamond mosaic paintings, and attend various sports clubs. She adores her four-legged friends, the cat Kex and the dog Barney. And she is also a real fighter.
Even to be born, she had to fight hard: the baby was born at 37 weeks, the labor lasted almost a whole day. Newborn Sofiyka was not breathing, and took her first breath only after resuscitation. Nine months later, her life hung in the balance again: the girl was hospitalized in a coma caused by hypoglycemia. However, only at the age of seven did she receive a diagnosis that sounded like a bolt from the blue – type 1 diabetes.
Sofiyka used to stay away from the hospital for a long time, because insulin injections were something scary for her.
But over time, the child gradually got used to it. The whole family lives with her according to a time regime – numbers and deadlines are now securely fixed in everyone’s minds. The girl undergoes insulin therapy: Actovegin – a short-acting injection – three times a day, Protaphane – a long-acting one – twice a day. Twice a year she undergoes inpatient treatment, in district and regional hospitals. Every year she goes on a health trip to Morshyn – mineral water has a positive effect on her sugar level. Even her little sister knows what time her meals should be.
But it's not just these numbers that fill the family's anxious thoughts. Treatment is not a cheap pleasure - there is not enough money. Patients receive insulin for free, but strips, needles, sensors, and treatment in sanatoriums fall on the shoulders of the family. Help them not to break under this weight!
