Milana is just six years old. She is an incredibly active, bright, and cheerful girl. Every day of hers is filled with movement, as she adores dancing, roller skating, and cycling.
But more than half a year ago, a serious illness entered the family. Milana was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. From that moment on, the girl's carefree childhood turned into a minute-by-minute fight for life.
Milana is very energetic, and because of this activity her blood sugar drops rapidly and unpredictably. She very frequently suffers from critical blood sugar drops. Her parents' greatest daily fear is failing to catch that moment in time and allowing a glycemic coma to occur. Every night for her parents means taking turns watching over their daughter's bedside, because in her sleep she cannot tell them she feels unwell.
An important milestone lies ahead for the family – first grade. This autumn Milana is due to start school. It is a new, long-awaited chapter that she has been so looking forward to. But for her parents, it is a time of immense anxiety. At school there will be no mother nearby to prick her finger every hour. The teacher will not be able to notice the first symptoms of a blood sugar drop during a lesson or catch low blood sugar at break time. The only solution and lifesaver for Milana is continuous glucose monitoring sensors. Such monitoring will allow the child to avoid the pain of constant finger pricks, as the sensor is placed once every few weeks. The system transmits blood sugar readings around the clock and will send a loud alert to the parents' or teacher's phone if blood sugar begins to drop rapidly. With continuous monitoring, Milana will be able to dance, run, study at school, and simply be a child – not a hostage to her illness. But because sensors are expensive and require regular replacement, her parents are reaching out with a request for help in providing Milana with this essential monitoring.
Together we can give Milana a safe childhood and a chance at a healthy future!
