We were approached by the administration and staff of the Kyiv City Maternity Hospital #6 with a request to help their hospital. The neonatal intensive care unit with post-intensive care beds treats almost 300 newborns each year, 25% of whom need breathing support. Prematurely born babies make up 50% of those treated, almost 25% are extremely low and very low birth weight babies, who require specialized intensive care and nursing. Nowadays four to six babies are born every day in the maternity hospital on the left bank of Kiev. And medical equipment is either outdated or not enough to save lives at all.

The patients of the maternity hospital are premature newborns and children with severe perinatal pathologies, who require respiratory therapy, infusion therapy, and continuous monitoring of vital functions. For this purpose, we intend to purchase syringe infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, and polyfunctional monitoring monitors to treat children.

Syringe infusion pumps are used to administer proper infusion therapy, which is only possible with special devices. Infusion pumps deliver fluid for intravenous feeding at a precisely calculated rate and protect the cerebral vessels from fluid overload. The pump is designed to deliver medication accurately at both high and low infusion rates. The pump has a monitoring and alarm system as well as a built-in rechargeable battery. All this ensures continuous operation of the pump when transporting a patient or in case of power failure, as well as monitors the proper operation of the pump, triggers an audible alarm, determining its cause.

Pulse oximeter is a medical monitoring and diagnostic device for non-invasive measurement of capillary blood oxygen saturation. The pulse oximeter has a special sensor that is attached to the child and monitors how much percent of the blood is saturated with oxygen. With this data, the doctor or nurse can adjust the percentage of oxygen that is given to the baby based on each baby's individual needs. It is also extremely important that premature babies often have respiratory arrests (apneas). They may be physiological, due to immaturity and pathological. This condition can be fatal, and with the signal pulse oximeter respiratory arrest can be recognized immediately and take the necessary steps to ensure that the baby begins to breathe. In addition, the pulse oximeter shows the heart rate of the baby, which is simply extremely important in nursing premature babies.

Polyfunctional surveillance monitors are designed to record, store and view a number of physiological parameters, as well as provide alarms when they are outside the acceptable range in newborns. They show ECG in 5 leads, respiration, functional arterial blood oxygen saturation, non-invasive BP, temperature. The monitor has two types of alarms: physiological alarms and technical alarms. The monitor has medication calculation, hemodynamic calculation, oxygenation calculation, ventilation calculation and renal function calculation functions, and also supports the recording function. The monitor can operate autonomously on its internal battery to ensure continuous operation even when the power supply is interrupted. It is indispensable for nursing babies.

Through this project we will be able to purchase: 2 pulse oximeters, 2 syringe infusion pumps and a functional maternity monitor.
