This is Vlad. He is 12 years old. He was born a healthy child, but at the age of two he lost his hearing due to a medical error. Bilateral sensorineural hearing loss of the 3rd degree took away his ability to hear and speak.
Hearing aids divided his life into the "before" and "after". Vlad had to learn to make his first sounds and say his first words all over again. His family refused to send him to a specialized boarding school, and instead every day became a path of hard work: lessons with a speech therapist, surdopedagogue, defectologist, psychologist, and hours of exercises at home.
Today, Vlad studies in the 6th grade of a regular school. He is an excellent student, takes part in competitions and olympiads, and has several awards. He especially loves natural sciences and history, enjoys drawing, and can spend hours building complex structures. He dreams of becoming an architect and helping rebuild Ukraine’s destroyed cities in the future.
But there is a problem the family can no longer overcome on their own. Because of the war, classes are often held in a bomb shelter – and there, Vlad can barely hear the teacher. The acoustics are difficult, and the rooms are not well insulated, so it becomes very noisy during lessons, with several classes studying at the same time. As Vlad explains, all the sounds merge into one continuous noise, and it becomes extremely difficult to distinguish individual words. And when he increases the volume on his hearing aid, it only gets worse – the sound becomes distorted, and he develops a headache.
Vlad is growing, his needs are changing – and his current hearing aids can no longer keep up. He often cannot understand what his classmates or teachers are saying. This affects his learning, his emotional state, and his self-confidence.
He needs new, more advanced hearing aids right now.
They will allow Vlad to feel more comfortable among friends, better perceive information, and continue working on his speech. And most importantly – they mean safety outdoors, greater independence, and one more step toward his dream.
Vlad believes that the impossible can become possible. Let’s help him hear the world.
