After cancer – a chance for Illia’s recovery

Illia Siekov is 17 years old and from Odesa. After graduating from school, he enrolled in a Road Transport College. He loved LEGO, computers, downhill biking, and spending time with friends. But during a routine medical check-up, doctors discovered a terrible diagnosis – medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor.

In February 2024, Illia underwent complex brain surgery. Complications followed: brain ischemia, a week in a coma, and a month in intensive care. The treatment continued with chemotherapy, radiation, and serious complications after a missile strike on the hospital (Ohmatdyt) where he was being treated. From the very first weeks, a physical therapist worked with him to prevent contractures and help restore lost functions.

Today, Illia has a tracheostomy tube. He cannot speak and communicates using hand signs and the alphabet – spelling out words letter by letter. Even the simplest actions are a huge challenge for him.

But there is hope! Illia urgently needs long-term rehabilitation, which costs 250,600 UAH (about $6,300). His mother is raising him alone and cannot cover this amount. Illia wants to speak again more than anything. Friends, we can help him!

His mother, a former economist, had to quit her job – Illia requires constant care. Some of the expenses are covered by donors and a state program, but the most essential part – professional rehabilitation – is still out of reach without our support.

Illia hasn’t given up. Thanks to therapy, he’s already using a tablet, watching videos, and even playing a bit. He dreams of speaking again, talking with friends, and living a full life.
