Sofia was born, grew up and developed as a healthy girl. But at the age of 5, on New Year's Eve 2022, Sofia fell ill with a severe viral disease. After that, the girl began to gradually lose weight and complain of pain in her legs and constant hunger. The disease developed for 3 months, and only at the end of March did the girl undergo sugar tests. An ambulance rushed Sofia and her mother to the Dnipro Regional Children's Clinical Hospital. The diagnosis was type 1 diabetes, and the girl was recognized as insulin-dependent. The examination also revealed that the girl was stunted and her internal organs were enlarged for her age. The mother and daughter spent 10 days in the intensive care unit. Then there were constant examinations, tests and ultrasounds to make sure that no concomitant disease was missed. With constant doctor's consultations, medication and blood glucose monitoring, Sofia began to grow gradually.
Three years have passed since then, and at the age of 8, the girl has learned to check her blood sugar level on her own, as well as to follow a diet, calculate food and its permissible amount. Sofia takes insulin at home, only under the supervision of her mother or father. The girl goes to school only with her mother because of hypoglycemia at school. In such cases, Sofiika gets lost, loses coordination and panics, and she shakes and has severe weakness.
In Sofia's family, her father is a full-time worker, and her mother has to work from home to be with her sick child whenever necessary. It is difficult for them to buy continuous monitoring sensors because of the rising prices of these devices, as well as the food (meat, cheese, fish, vegetables and cereals) that are needed for healthy and high-quality nutrition of the girl within the calculated diet. A large amount of medical equipment is required to ensure a full life for a child with diabetes. Sofia has to use the same needle several times, often pierce her fingers to monitor her glucose levels, and give up some foods in her diet. This all affects the child, who, despite having a serious incurable disease, wants to be active, joyful, intelligent and creative, simply put - an ordinary little girl like everyone else. The girl's mother asks for help to buy sensors for Sofia.
