Premature babies are born before their bodies are fully prepared for life outside the womb. They often have very low birth weight, an immature nervous system, and difficulties with breathing, temperature regulation, and maintaining a stable condition on their own. That is why the first days and weeks of life for such infants require particularly attentive care, constant medical supervision, and conditions as close as possible to a safe intrauterine environment.

The Department of Anesthesiology and Neonatal Intensive Care at the Volyn Regional Territorial Medical Association for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood, a municipal enterprise of the Volyn Regional Council, cares for premature and critically ill infants who require special conditions for nursing, treatment, and constant medical supervision.

For these children, it’s not just state-of-the-art equipment that matters. Things that may seem simple at first glance are also of great importance: positioning aids, orthopedic pillows, curtains, and incubator covers. These items help create a more stable, safe, and comfortable environment for the baby.

A premature infant cannot yet control the position of their body well on their own. Due to the immaturity of their muscles and nervous system, they need proper support. Positioning aids and supports help keep the baby in a physiological position, reduce unnecessary tension, and maintain the correct placement of the arms, legs, head, and torso. This is important for the baby’s development, breathing, peace of mind, and safety in the incubator.

Orthopedic pillows and special positioning aids help nurses and doctors better organize the space around the infant. For the baby, this means less stress, more stability, and a feeling of gentle support. These products are especially important for low-birth-weight infants who require long-term care.

Curtains and covers for incubators also play an important role. They protect newborns from excessive light, noise, and unnecessary stimuli. For a premature baby, even the ordinary light in the ward or constant movement around them can be an additional burden. A protected space helps the baby adapt better, rest more peacefully, and channel their energy not into fighting stress, but into growth and recovery.

Every day, the doctors and nurses in this ward fight for the lives of their smallest patients. They care for children born too early or in critical condition, helping them breathe, gain weight, stabilize, and gradually grow stronger. And for this daily work, it’s not just complex medical technologies that matter, but everything that creates a safe environment for the infant.

As part of this project, we are raising funds to purchase:

- 1.1-meter multifunctional positioning pads – 10 units;
- positioning pads for the shoulder girdle of a premature infant – 15 units;
- positioning pads for prone positioning – 10 units;
- curtains – 10 units;
- incubator covers – 2 units;
- orthopedic pillows – 10 units.

This purchase will help the Department of Anesthesiology and Neonatal Intensive Care create better conditions for the care of premature and critically ill infants. For doctors, these are essential tools for daily care. For the little patients, it means more peace of mind, comfort, and support during a time when every day counts.

Join the project. Let’s help Volyn’s youngest patients get warm and safe conditions for living, growing, and recovering!
