In September 2023, the project "Animals Who Feel the War – Help for the Zoo" was launched on the website of the ICF "Ukrainian Philanthropic Marketplace", dobro.ua. The goal of this project is to raise funds to cover food costs for the animals at the Kharkiv Zoo.
By the end of 2023, as a certain amount had been raised and the zoo faced an urgent need for meat, we allocated 14,080.00 UAH from the project funds. By adding funds from the Foundation's own budget, we were able to purchase 355 kg of beef for a total of 49,984.00 UAH.
The fundraising continued. In 2024, more funds were raised, and in December 2024, we allocated an additional 38,442.00 UAH. Supplemented by the Foundation’s budget, we purchased 418 kg of meat for a total of 54,967.00 UAH.
In February 2025, the zoo administration reached out again regarding the need for animal feed. Consequently, 17,918.00 UAH was withdrawn from the project funds. We added our own funds and paid a total of 24,963.00 UAH for 265 kg of meat. The delivery to the zoo took place on March 13, 2025.
Recently, in February 2026, we allocated 33,604.97 UAH due to the ongoing critical food supply issues at the zoo. By adding Foundation funds, we paid for 206 kg of meat with a total value of 33,990.00 UAH (including 33,604.97 UAH from the ICF "UРМ"). This delivery was made on February 24, 2026.
Currently, the zoo is only partially operational and has faced a shortage of funding for animal care and staff maintenance for three years. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the zoo has survived thanks to charitable support. We have also been supporting its activities for nearly three years.
The Kharkiv Zoo is not only a significant state-level conservation site but also a historical treasure. Founded in 1895, it is the first zoo in Ukraine and ranks among the twenty oldest zoos in the world. In terms of the value of its collection, the Kharkiv Zoo ranks second in Ukraine after the Kyiv Zoo. It is home to 1,962 representatives of fauna across more than 200 species, including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
The fundraising for this project is ongoing.
