This is Olenka, she is 10 years old. The girl lives in a village in the Ternopil region and is in 5th grade. Olenka enjoys helping to look after the family's animals: cats, dogs, and most of all a little calf named Zirochka. She also loves coloring paint-by-number pictures, doing diamond mosaic puzzles, playing with her older sister, and spending time with friends. But the girl's life is not as carefree as one would wish – she has type 1 diabetes.
Almost a year ago, this illness changed her life forever. Since then, Olena has been living by new rules: counting every gram of food, planning and calculating every insulin dose, and constantly measuring her blood sugar during the day and in the middle of the night. On top of this, constant vigilance to always have something sweet in her pocket in case of low blood sugar. It is control over life without pauses or days off. But alongside this – it is a life about strength. About the responsibility of a small person who is forced to grow up early. Of course, for now her parents help her with everything, supporting her and trying to provide everything needed to manage her diabetes.
On the outside the child looks healthy, but her life and health depend on constant monitoring, insulin injections, and painful finger pricks. Continuous monitoring sensors could ease blood sugar management significantly. But they are very expensive for the family and require constant replacement, as a single sensor has a short lifespan.
Let's help Olenka live safely and have the ability to see her blood sugar levels without pricking her fingers every time. Every contribution is this child's safety and the preservation of her health.
