Kira is a creative and inspired girl who loves drawing. She is passionate about various active sports – cheerleading and skiing. Over the past year she has been doing gymnastics and has already won her first sports awards.
From early childhood the girl was frequently ill and experienced the loss of loved ones. And at the age of five she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Since then, every year Kira is admitted to hospital for check-ups and adjustment of her insulin therapy.
Kira is now ten years old. The girl has entered puberty, which means blood sugar spikes occur very frequently and can be very difficult to manage. There are days when her blood sugar levels rise sharply, requiring her to measure her blood sugar up to 10 times a day through finger pricks. But keeping blood sugar within normal range is very difficult without continuous monitoring.
During her intense two-hour training sessions, Kira often feels unwell but is too embarrassed to admit it.
The girl dreams of playing the piano, but due to frequent finger pricks she has almost lost sensation in her fingers.
Kira has a younger sister with a disability who requires constant attention and care. Their mother raises the children on her own and lives on social assistance. This money barely covers the children's most basic everyday needs.
Under these circumstances, it is extremely difficult for the family to find funds for the expensive continuous glucose monitoring that is absolutely vital for Kira. That is why the family is forced to turn to caring people for help, as her mother cannot provide the child with modern diabetes management tools on her own.
Daily finger pricks, constant blood sugar monitoring, and the fear of dangerous fluctuations have become part of Kira's life. We can change this.
