10-year-old Sofia loves animals and enjoys playing and spending time with friends. She has a passion for drawing. But she is no ordinary child – she is a child living with type 1 diabetes.
The illness came unexpectedly when Sonia was 7 years old. The girl began to suffer from intense thirst, grew tired quickly, lost her appetite, and started losing weight. A blood test showed elevated blood sugar. From that moment on came constant insulin injections, daily blood sugar measurements, carbohydrate counting in every meal, adherence to dietary guidelines, and round-the-clock blood sugar monitoring.
But life goes on, and she must live and learn. Blood sugar fluctuations are a constant reality that must be managed both day and night. Her parents do everything they can to teach Sofiika how to properly care for herself.
Sofiika's father went to defend the country, where he suffered a serious wound resulting in the amputation of his left foot. The family is going through an extraordinarily difficult time – there is not enough money even for the bare essentials. Sensors for Sofia are a chance to at least somewhat reduce the number of finger pricks and establish round-the-clock monitoring both at home and beyond. The girl loves spending active time outdoors, riding her bike. Sensors are a lifesaver, as blood sugar often drops sharply to critical levels during physical activity.
The family is reaching out with a request for help in providing their daughter with continuous monitoring sensors during these difficult circumstances.
